Two off-duty nurses help save man trapped inside flipped SUV in Cape Coral

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – A man was rushed to the hospital after flipping his SUV on Hancock Bridge Parkway Wednesday afternoon.

The man was driving east on Hancock with a juvenile passenger when he went to change lanes, hitting a van, according to Cape Coral police.

In the aftermath of the crash, two off-duty nurses stepped in to aid the man trapped in his flipped-over SUV until emergency crews arrived.

Antonetta Bohn and Ashley Crews, the nurses who stepped up to help, received The Cape Coral Fire Department’s “Community Recognition Coin.” This is awarded to someone who has assisted in the lifesaving effort at an emergency scene before or during the Fire Department’s arrival.

“It takes you a second to kind of figure out the situation and what is happening,” Crews said. “Once I realized that somebody was in the car and needed help. Just kinda ran and it’s just my instinct to go. Even though there is not much we can do. I mean even EMS can’t do much, he needed a hospital. You just have to be there for people.”

The driver has life-threatening injuries, and his passenger had minor injuries.

The two people in the car they hit were not injured.

Alcohol and/or drugs are not a factor of the crash, according to police.
