DESOTO COUNTY, Fla. – Two horses were killed in two separate crashes just before midnight in DeSoto County Saturday.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a man was riding a horse trying to cross US 17 near State Road 35 when a car hit the pair leaving the horse dead and the man in critical condition.

Shortly after, another horse escaped a nearby enclosure after a gate was left open and wandered onto the road, troopers said.

The second horse was also hit and killed by a passing vehicle.

Both drivers were uninjured in the deadly crashes, according to FHP.
