Hit by a ransomware attack? Here’s what to do

CNN) — The list of high-profile ransomware attacks grows longer and more alarming by the week, impacting everything from gas pipelines and meat supplies to ferries. Those companies and agencies that get hit must scramble to protect their systems and a tough decision on whether to pay hackers to remove the disruption. In the face of that situation, affected companies may rush to reach out to their IT teams, police, crisis PR, lawyers and law enforcement. But, frequently, one of the first calls is to their insurance provider. Companies often purchase specific...

Facebook plans to end rule exemptions for politicians

AP – Facebook plans to end its policy to exempt politicians from certain moderation rules on its site, according to several news reports. The original policy held the rationale that speech from political leaders is inherently newsworthy and in the public interest even if it is offensive, bullying or otherwise controversial, Associated Press reported. The decision comes as the company mulls over how to treat the account of former President Trump, which was indefinitely suspended on Jan. 6. The change in policy was first reported by the tech site The Verge and later confirmed by the New...

CNN – The SolarWinds hackers, who are behind one of the worst data breaches ever to strike the US government, have launched a new attack against more than 150 government agencies, think tanks and other organizations, according to Microsoft. The group, which Microsoft calls “Nobelium,” targeted 3,000 email accounts at various organizations this week — most of which were in the United States, the company said in a blog post Thursday. These hackers are part of the same Russian group believed to be behind the 2020 attack on software vendor SolarWinds, which targeted at least nine...

NBC NEWS — Twitter is letting people apply again for blue-and-white checkmarks, inviting what may be a flood of requests from people who’ve asked for years to get a badge of approval from the social media company. Twitter said Thursday it would begin rolling out a new process to apply for the coveted verification badges, which have been a status symbol on the internet since Twitter unveiled them in 2009. The company granted them in the past to politicians, celebrities, journalists, and other public figures but generally stopped handing them out in 2017 as it considered an overhaul,...

Mighty Mussels test robo-umpire technology for MLB

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Umpires are not perfect. They are not robots. However, this Summer they are being replaced by robots at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers.  “We’re kind of the guinea pigs for this,” said Mighty Mussels manager Brian Meyer.  For two-thirds of all Mussels games this season balls and strikes will be called at the plate using Automatic Balls and Strikes (ABS) technology.  It’s something Meyer is still getting used to.  “You can tell there is a little difference just in terms of delay from the umpire’s call,”...

Elon Musk’s ‘Starlink’ Satellite spotted in Sanibel

SANIBEL, Fla.— Ricky Williamceau and his buddies went out for an evening fishing trip on Monday. One of the men in the group noticed something in the sky and told everyone to look up. What they saw looked like a string of stars, one right after the other. “Woah. Everyone was kind of like ‘oh my God’,” said Williamceau. For a moment, they all watched in disbelief wondering if they had just seen a UFO. While it looked out of this world, the bright lights were actually part of Elon Musk’s latest satellite internet project called ‘Starlink’. “It...
