‘Ring of fire’ lights up the sky for some in Northern Hemisphere

CNN — A “ring of fire” solar eclipse appeared in the sky for some people in the Northern Hemisphere on Thursday as the moon partially blocked out the sun. A solar eclipse happens when the moon crosses between the sun and the Earth, which blocks a portion of the sun’s rays, according to NASA. This eclipse is an annular eclipse, meaning the moon is far enough away from the Earth that it appears smaller than the sun. The name “annular” comes from the Latin word “annulus,” which means ring-shaped, according to Farmers’ Almanac. When the moon...

Curiosity rover spots colorful, sparkling clouds on Mars

CNN –  The Curiosity rover spied colorful shining clouds on Mars as it trekked the planet’s terrain. While color usually presents itself in shades of red in the frozen desert, the skies above the rover appeared to almost sparkle. Unlike Earth, Mars doesn’t have many overcast, cloudy days. The red planet has a thin, dry atmosphere, so clouds tend to appear in the skies over the Martian equator when the planet is cold and farthest from the sun in its oval-shaped orbit every two Earth years, CNN reported. One Martian year ago [two Earth years], Curiosity spotted clouds that...

New NASA photo shows our galaxy’s ‘violent energy’

(CNN) — NASA has released an image detailing the never-before-seen “violent energy” at the center of our galaxy, created after two decades of research. The stunning panorama was compiled using data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and the MeerKAT radio telescope in South Africa. Images also documented an X-ray thread known as G0.17-0.41 that researchers say suggests a mechanism that could control the energy flow, and even the evolution of the Milky Way. “The galaxy is like an ecosystem,” University of Massachusetts Amherst...

Solar orbiter mission captures sun blasts that could disrupt technology on Earth

CNN — An accident turned out to be helpful when the Solar Orbiter mission caught a glimpse of some eruptions coming from the sun. The eruptions, called coronal mass ejections, blast out solar particles across the solar system and have the potential to disrupt technology if they reach Earth. A flyby brought the spacecraft within 46.5 million miles of the sun — that’s half the distance between the massive star and Earth. Instruments picked up on the eruptions on Feb. 10. It was the first time the orbiter witnessed the eruptions. The mission, which launched in February 2020,...
