FWC rescues abandoned manatee calf found in Caloosahatchee River

A manatee calf was recently spotted swimming alone in the Caloosahatchee River. The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) was called by a concerned resident who lives in front of the water where the baby was seen. After waiting a day to make sure the mother manatee was not nearby feeding, FWC crews rescued the calf with a hoop net. The male calf was measured at 3.8 feet long. He was transported to Seaworld Orlando for rehabilitation, according to FWC. In a facebook post, FWC reported the baby is starting to gain weight and is doing very well. “Darling” manatee released after recovering from red tide-related illness

LEE COUNTY, Fla. — Deputies with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office helped return a 1,100-pound manatee back to the wild on Wednesday. The manatee, nicknamed “Darling,” was rescued by LCSO deputies on February 13 after it got stuck in some mangroves and needed treatment for red tide-related health issues. Darling was transferred to Zoo Tampa for treatment and rehabilitation. On May 12, Darling was deemed healthy enough to head back to the wild.
