FWC rescues abandoned manatee calf found in Caloosahatchee River
A manatee calf was recently spotted swimming alone in the Caloosahatchee River.
The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) was called by a concerned resident who lives in front of the water where the baby was seen.
After waiting a day to make sure the mother manatee was not nearby feeding, FWC crews rescued the calf with a hoop net.
The male calf was measured at 3.8 feet long. He was transported to Seaworld Orlando for rehabilitation, according to FWC.
In a facebook post, FWC reported the baby is starting to gain weight and is doing very well.
