COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. — Bears are on the move and have appeared all over Southwest Florida this week.
Florida’s black bear population continues to grow. There are an estimated 1,000 bears in South Florida living in the conservation areas of Big Cypress National Preserve and Everglades National Park, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Now that bears are becoming more active and roaming closer to humans, officials are urging people to use bear-resistant trash bins. Collier County sells the bear-proof cans for $115 each.

FORT MYERS, Fla. – A young black bear was found inside a Fort Myers business on Tuesday morning.
Fort Myers police said the bear was found inside of Hurricane Safe Shutters off Earl Road.
The bear was seen calmly hanging out inside the business, lying on the floor.

Fort Myers police monitored the bear until officers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission were able to respond and relocate the bear to its natural habitat.

NAPLES, Fla. – A bear who first was spotted roaming around Naples Friday morning has been seen all over Collier County since.
The bear was last spotted at Doc’s Beach House Monday after being seen at the Ritz Carlton Saturday night.
Collier County deputies received a 911 Saturday call saying, “Calling from Ritz Carlton Beach Resort, we have a black bear that’s cornered in our front drive area right next to one of the golf storage rooms.”
Naples Police believe he swam over from Keewaydin Island and began traveling north.

NAPLES. Fla. – A small bear was found wandering near Central Avenue and Gulf Shore Boulevard in Naples.
The Naples Police Department is in the area and said the bear was running around residents backyards and going into pools.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is also on scene.

DOUGLAS, Ariz. / AP — Residents of an Arizona border city were left in awe after a surprise visit from a bear.
The bear appeared on Sunday in downtown Douglas, officials with the Arizona Game & Fish Department said.
Bolder than the average bear, it climbed up two utility poles and sat on some wires high above the ground.
State wildlife officials, Douglas police, the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Border Patrol closed off U.S. Hwy 191 while trying to get the bear to leave.
