Health Matters: Before You Go Home After Surgery
From building strength to increasing endurance, health experts at Lee Health’s post-acute rehabilitation work with patients to get them home safely after surgery. “We do a lot of orthopedic patients who come in after a knee or a hip surgery. We have back surgery patients, stroke patients, and then medical patients, who had some severe illness and were debilitated,” said Frances Haas, a nurse practitioner with Lee Health.
Post-acute rehab is also important for patients with heart failure and pulmonary issues. “We want to make sure that they are able to take care of themselves, to do their activities of daily living, to take their medications safely and properly, to get from point A to point B in the home,” she said. Working with physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech therapists, patients can work to regain their mobility and independence. “If a patient is unable to reach a goal to safely return home, then alternative discharge planning may include such thing as assisted living facility,” said Haas.
Helping patients to get up and move after surgery can also prevent medical issues like blood clots and pneumonia. “Patients who discharge home are 5.6 percent more likely to have to return to the hospital within 30 days, so it’s a much safer plan of care to discharge the patients here and let us evaluate them and assist them in building the strength they need,” she said. Giving patients the extra care they need after surgery to return to their normal actives and improve their quality of life.
