Florida Ag. Commissioner Nikki Fried enters governor’s race
Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Nikki Fried has joined the governor’s race.
According to the Florida Department of State, Fried filed for candidacy on June 1 for the 2022 General Election.
Fried, who is a Democrat, has long been hinting at running for governor and has been one of Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis’ fiercest critics. In 2018, Fried was the only Democrat to win a statewide election, and she is currently the only Democrat in DeSantis’ cabinet.
Last week, sources close to the matter said Fried would announce her candidacy at a news conference on Tuesday.
Fried will go up against former Gov. Charlie Crist in the 2022 Primary, though early polls favor Crist.
Six other Democrats have officially filed, as well as two independent candidates and one Republican candidate, according to the state’s website.
