DESOTO COUNTY, Fla. – Investigators are still searching for the killer of a 36-year-old man who was found dead in a DeSoto County creek in 1980.

The body of Merritt Wheeler Sr. was found on October 8, 1980, in Horse Creek near the bridge at County Road 769, according to Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers.

Detectives said it was clear that Wheeler had suffered injuries before being placed in the water and the case was determined to be a homicide.

Over 40 years later, investigators are still asking for tips to help solve the cold case.

Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department or SWFL Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS.
