Department of Health continues to issue health alerts as algae conditions worsen

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Toxic algae is still spreading throughout Southwest Florida waterways and it could put a damper on your health.

The Department of Health has issued a health alert that includes the Davis Boat Ramp. Although the water is mostly clear, people still need to be wary of potential health risks.

A recent water sampling showed high levels of algae toxins in the water near the boat ramp. The levels were so high that health officials are recommending that people stay out of the water.

Those who plan on boating or using a jet ski on Memorial Day weekend should keep in mind the potential risks.

If blue-green algae is swallowed, it can cause stomach problems. Kids and pets are especially vulnerable to its effects.
