6.0 magnitude earthquake strikes near Panama coast
PUNTA DE BURICA, Panama — A 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck about 90 miles off the coast of Punta de Burica, Chiriquí, Panama on Thursday morning, officials said.
Information from the United States Geological Survey shows that the earthquake’s epicenter is in an area where the Caribbean and North American plates meet.
The earthquake began around 9:42 a.m. local time about 94.4 miles off the coast of Panama and 6 miles under the North Pacific Ocean.
USGS officials rated the recent earthquake as a green alert which means there is a low likelihood of casualties and damage. So far, no deaths have been reported.
On Monday, a 3.1 magnitude earthquake struck in the Panama – Costa Rica border region.
